Centenary Commemorative Book

100 Years of Caring

This beautifully illustrated book is a collector’s item and comes in Hardback with 276 pages of nostalgic stores and photographs of Cappagh over the past 100 years. It is a combination of stories and pictures donated by past patients and staff, and compiled into a fabulous visual of 100 years of Caring.

For many, their childhood memories are of Cappagh, spending up to 8 years in the hospital.

Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital is part of Dublin’s history, both architecturally and as an institution. Cappagh has a reputation for caring that still exists today. Its impact on the community and patients is witnessed by the many contributions to the book and by whole sections dedicated to it in books by ex patients (Jonathan Aiken and Paddy Doyle).

A small taster of the book:
“Some of the other boys and I decided we’d rob the orchard in the hospital grounds. A small army of us in wheelchairs, on crutches and with callipers found a way into the orchard. I slid off my wheelchair and crawled through a privet hedge. Here I encountered my first problem as I was unable to stand and I couldn’t reach the trees bearing the delicious-looking apples, pears and plums! Luckily, one of the raiders had a pair of underarm crutches, the “Long John Silver” type. These proved invaluable in getting the fruit from the trees. He managed to get the crutch to pull the branch down, allowing us to grab as many fruits as we could. To get the rest of it, the branch was allowed spring back, tossing various fruits into the air and on to the ground.Gathering it was now an easy task. What I didn’t want was to be caught as that would have meant a few days and nights in the babies ward. Stereophonic screaming and smelly nappies were not something I wanted to have to endure for any length of time. “
– Paddy Doyle excerpt from the book
